For gallantry whilst on a daylight patrol on the afternoon of 08/08/1918, N.E. of LOISNE. When near their objective the patrol was discovered one member being wounded and at the same time parties of the enemy began to move towards them from both flanks. Pte. Woods immediately bound up the wounded man and kept the enemy at bay with rifle fire until he had reached a place of safety. He then retired himself. But for his courage and resource the wounded man would almost certainly have been captured. The strength of the patrol was 2 N.C.O's and 20 other ranks.
