(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. This N.C.O. showed great dash and coolness throughout the attack. He knew the ground (having been over it in a previous raid) and led his men over the open, making use of the best means of approach. Just as the barrage lifted, he leapt forward and shouted to his men (a bombing party) "Follow me, I know the way" and he went through and into the position in under two minutes, killing several of the enemy. He repeatedly came back for ammunition under heavy shell fire and by doing this he also helped a Lewis-gun team that was near and was using much ammunition shooting at the retreating enemy. Throughout he was cool and cheerful and set a very fine example to his men. He was Mentioned in Despatches for gallantry on the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt on October 13th 1915.
