For conspicuous gallantry and initiative on the 17th October 1918 when the enemy positions S.E. of VAUX ANDIGNY were attacked. At the commencement of the attack his Platoon Officer and Sergeant were both killed. This N.C.O. took command and led his Platoon with skill and determination, capturing two machine-guns and several prisoners in the enemy first line defences. Later, during the attack on ANDIGNY LES FERMES he displayed great courage and determination in attacking with the remains of his Platoon a machine-gun post on the road to the East of the village. He set a very fine example to his men throughout the day.
