For conspicuous gallantry opposite GOMMECOURT at 4.00pm on the 2nd July 1916 when he went out about 100 yards in front of our trenches to take some water to L/Cpl. Russel, 1/7th Sherwood Foresters, who was lying wounded in the open. He placed the wounded man in a shell hole and stayed with him until 10.50pm when under cover of darkness he assisted to bring him in.
