For gallantry and coolness in emergency on 19th May 1917 when the Battalion was holding the front line before LENS. During the early morning he was visiting a post in the outpost line that was finished by his Platoon. While there he observed an enemy patrol creeping up on the far side of a railway that was near. He told his men to keep quiet and waited till the enemy patrol had crossed the railway and was about twenty-five yards away. He then opened fire with Lewis-guns and rifles. Some of the enemy, who at once fled, were undoubtedly hit and one body was recovered from which identification was obtained. The enemy patrol was from fifteen to twenty in strength and there is not doubt that Sgt. Warren, by meeting the situation as he did, frustrated an enemy attempt to rush our post and also by holding his fire obtained a valuable identification. This N.C.O. was granted the Military Medal for gallantry in March 1916 and he ha done much good work since he came out with the Battalion in February 1915.
