Major A/Lt. Colonel Henry Archibald WARING

(Recommended for Officer de L'Ordre de Leopold)

On the 19/06/1917 this Officer's Battalion carried out a successful attack on enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. It was mainly due to the careful preparations made by this Officer that the attack was driven back with great loss to the enemy (including the capture of twenty-five prisoners) and slight loss to his own Battalion. Lt. Colonel Waring, after the capture of the position spent a long time in the front line organising strong posts and defensive measures and it was no doubt due to his sound judgement, fine example and cheerfulness that four counter-attacks by the enemy, delivered during the night were driven off and heavy casualties inflicted.

Submitted 29/06/1917; Recommendation not accepted. Awarded D.S.O. and Mentioned in Despatches, New Years Honours List 1918.
