For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the night 12th/13th December 1917 in trenches near CAMBRIN. Cpl. Vassey was the N.C.O. on duty in his Platoon when the enemy put down a very heavy artillery and trench mortar barrage, mixed with gas shells, on our line, and blew in a great part of his Company front. He at once, being cut off from his Platoon Commander, took charge of the advanced posts and prepared to meet an enemy raid. An enemy party of eight men then appeared in and on both sides of a forward sap and bombed the post. Cpl. Vassey and one man rushed forward, attacked the enemy with rifle and bombs and drove them back. His coolness and readiness to command were most marked. On the night 9th/10th 1917 in an attempted raid and heavy bombardment, and again on the night of 10th/11th December 1917 during an enemy gas projection and heavy shelling, Cpl. Vassey took command when stretches of trench were completely blown in, and posts cut off. He did most useful work in reorganising and inspiring his men.
