For conspicuous gallantry on May 30th 1918 when the enemy attempted to raid our trenches at Route 'A' KEEP, N.W. of FESTUBERT. Early in the morning the enemy put down a heavy artillery and trench mortar barrage and then attacked with his infantry. Pte. Vacey is a stretcher bearer. When the enemy barrage started he was at Company H.Q. The roads and tracks between Company H.Q. and the front line – a distance of some 1000 yards – were being heavily shelled. Pte. Vacey, however, at once and on his own initiative started off and went through the shelling to the front line. He at once started to attend to the wounded and did most useful work, showing a very high degree of courage throughout.
