240779 L/ Cpl. William TONKS

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on July 1st 1917 when the Battalion attacked the enemy positions at CITE DU MOULIN, S.W. of LENS. The Company to which this N.C.O. belonged, met with strong opposition and a party of the enemy started to bomb them. L/Cpl. Tonks at once went forward by himself and attacked this bombing party thus giving the party behind him time to organise. Throughout the attack he behaved with great gallantry and resource and was of much assistance to his Company commander. He set a fine example to the men. He also carried several messages under very heavy fire from artillery, machine-guns and rifles.
