For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 12th 1917 when a raid was made on the enemy trenches West of LENS. Pte. Summers was in charge of a Lewis-gun and handled his gun with great coolness and contempt of danger. He took up positions where he could get good targets on the enemy and inflicted many casualties. His fearless conduct was most noticeable and had a fine effect on the men near him. He has previously done much good and gallant work.
