For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when acting as a stretcher-bearer. He brought in a man who had been wounded in the rear of the trench and later another wounded man, on this occasion being himself wounded. He returned to have his wound dressed and then went out again to bring in another man.
Awarded D.C.M., L/G 11/03/1916; For the same action Pte. Harry S. Smith was also awarded the Croix de Guerre, L/G 24/02/1916
