For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of January 2nd/3rd 1918 in trenches, S.W. of AUCHY-LEZ-LA-BASSEE when the enemy put down a very heavy barrage of artillery and trench mortars on the front line and it was impossible to get news from the front line at Company H.Q. in the tunnel. Pte. Reynolds climbed out from a secret entrance to the tunnel, which was being very heavily trench mortared and fired Very lights to assist observation over the front line. He then, on his own initiative, patrolled the whole of his Company front above ground, and reported the situation to his Company Commander, this being the first information he received. Later, he worked under machine-gun fire for over five hours to rescue two men who had been buried by a succession of heavy trench mortar bombs, which completely wrecked the post. Throughout he displayed great coolness and initiative, and his work was most valuable.
