241626 Pte. George Percy RAWSON

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry on May 17th 1917 when the Battalion was holding the front line trenches before LENS. With another man he was going from one post to the next in the outpost line when he heard suspicious sounds and saw five or six of the enemy on a bank above him. The enemy threw a bomb which wounded him and his companion. In spite of his wound Pte. Rawson immediately fired five shots at the enemy and charged them with the bayonet. The enemy then fled. He then went in search of his companion who had been wounded and stunned but being unable to find him he returned to report. He claimed to have hit three men and this was substantiated by the recovery of two bodies from which identifications were obtained. The N.C.O. of the enemy party (killed) had a dagger in his hand and the rifle of both dead men had rounds in the breach and it seems that the party was waiting to catch our patrols. Pte. Rawson showed very great courage in tackling the party when he himself was wounded and the odds were much against him.
