2/Lieut. George Henry QUANTRILL

(Recommended for Military Cross)

For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership on 06/05/1917 at LOOS when in command of a raiding party. A heavy barrage was put down in front of the portion of the enemy trench to be raided, but by personal example and good leadership he got his party through the barrage and withdrew them without loss after inflicting casualties upon the enemy. He was slightly wounded during the operation and its success was largely due to his personal courage, example and skilful leadership. Prior to the raid this Officer carried out some skilful, daring and, as events proved, very accurate reconnaissance's of the enemy position in brilliant moonlight under circumstances of great difficulty.

2/Lieut. George Harry QUANTRILL M.C.

(Recommended for Bar to Military Cross)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. This Officer was in command of the Reserve Company but early in the action one of the assaulting Companies suffered casualties including the Company Commander. 2/Lt. Quantrill was sent forward to command the remnants of this Company together with part of his own Company. Shortly afterwards two Platoons of a third Company were sent up to him. The situation was difficult and the men under him were thus drawn from three Companies. He organised his command with considerable skill and resource. The enemy counter attacked on a few occasions, but was driven off. He showed great courage, resource and energy under very trying circumstances. He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry and good work on a raid near Loos in May last.
