240575 Sgt. Edwin Arthur PORTER

(Recommended for Medaille d'Honeur with Silver Swords)

This N.C.O. came out with the Division on 28/02/1918 and has served with it continuously ever since. As Provost Sergeant he has on many occasions shown courage and resource when in charge of ration dump under fire, notably at VERMELLES in September 1917. On this occasion the dump upon which were large numbers of Stokes mortar bombs, was very heavily shelled and rations had to be transhipped from one set of trenches to another. Sgt. Porter by his disregard for danger and example, kept his party at work and cleared the rations and stores from the shelled area.
