206 C.S.M. Herbert PICKARD (Barton-upon-Humber)

(Recommended for Italian Decoration - Bronze Medal)

On many occasions has shown extreme bravery in the trenches. His devotion to duty since the Division came to France has been exemplary. I consider him worthy of the Italian Decoration.

240010 C.S.M. Herbert PICKARD (Barton-upon-Humber)

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS on the night of 8th/9th June 1917 during an attack on the enemy trenches. He was with a Company sent forward to wire in front of the captured trenches. The 'dump' was being heavily shelled, and he showed great coolness in organising the parties and issuing the pickets and wire which had become entangled and were covered up. Later, he was of the greatest assistance to his Company Commander in superintending the work and encouraging the men. He showed a complete disregard for the heavy shelling and set a magnificent example throughout. This Warrant Officer has been twice recommended for his gallantry and good work, but has received his reward. He is over fifty years of age, and he has some thirty years service in the Volunteers and Territorial Force. He has done about three years service in this country and throughout has set a very fine example of grit and courage.

Submitted 10/06/1917; Card of Recognition 20/06/1917; Awarded D.C.M. 06/07/1917; Died of Wounds (received in action 26/06/1917) on 04/07/1917 at Calais.
