1054 Pte. Herbert PHELPS

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of January 2nd/3rd 1918 in trenches S.W. of AUCHY-LEZ-LA-BASSEE when the enemy put down a heavy barrage of artillery and trench mortars on the front line. Pte. Phelps was on an important post at the junction of the front line and a sap leading to a crater where there was an enemy post. When the other five men on the post were buried by heavy trench mortar bombs, Pte. Phelps, though badly shaken, remained on his post by himself, continually patrolled the trench to his flank and the forward sap to the crater. He continued alone throughout the bombardment, and kept this important post under close observation. The enemy subsequently raided posts on his right. He set a splendid example to his comrades and displayed great coolness and initiative, as owing the severity of the fire around him, no superior officer was able to reach him until the bombardment had ceased, and he was found alone at duty.

Submitted 04/01/1919; Awarded M.M., Also Card of Recognition.
