(Recommended for Bar to Military Cross)
For gallantry and good leadership when in charge of a daylight patrol consisting of himself and two other ranks, N.E. of LOISNE. An identification was urgently required and owing to the way in which the enemy held his line in daytime, it was necessary to penetrate some distance beyond it. This Officer led his patrol some 200 yards behind the enemy line to a point which was known to be strongly held. Shelters were there discovered, one of which when entered was found to contain six of the enemy asleep. Identification having been obtained a bomb was placed in the centre of the party and the patrol withdrew. In doing so they were observed and parties of the enemy began to advance towards them. One of the patrol went forward covered by Lt. Perrott and the other member of a patrol and placed another bomb which exploded. The enemy were then getting close but by skilful use of the ground and fire this Officer withdrew his patrol safely after having obtained a valuable identification and most useful information regarding the enemy. This Officer was awarded the Military Cross in the Birthday Honours List 1918.
