For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on September 8th 1917 when a road was made on the enemy trenches S.W. of CITE ST. ELIE. Sgt. Needham was with a small party of men and pressed forward until stopped by a strong barricade in a communications trench just before the enemy third line. The enemy at once opened fire at very close range from this point. He at once attacked this barricade with bombs and continued until his supply was exhausted. Throughout the rest of the time the raiding party remained in the enemy trenches he did most valuable work in organising parties and directing rifle fire on the enemy in their third line. Throughout he exposed himself without any regard for danger, and showed great resource and initiative. Strength of raiding party: 4 officers and 123 other ranks.
