241157 Sgt. James MOUNTAIN

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry on November 2nd 1917, S.W. of CITE ST. ELIE. On the previous night on a party of the enemy was seen in 'No Man's Land' and was fired on. A patrol of the enemy went out to search, but could find nothing in the dark. About 6.45am, when it was broad daylight, Sgt. Mountain saw an object, which appeared to be a body lying out some seventy yards away in the open. He warned the neighbouring posts, and although in full view of the enemy, he at once crawled out to investigate. He found that it was the dead body of a German N.C.O. A machine-gun opened fire as he dragged the body into a shell hole and then he searched the pockets and cut off the shoulder straps, thereby obtaining identification that was previously unknown. He safely brought documents and various pieces of clothing back to out trenches.
