For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on July 1st 1917, when the Battalion attacked the enemy positions at CITE DU MOULIN, S.W. of LENS. This man is a Lewis-gunner and gave great assistance to L/Cpl. French who was in command of a party that did valuable work under very heavy fire on the left flank, which was exposed. On his own initiative he pressed forward on several occasions when it was impossible to get more than one man on. On three occasions he crept round houses with a revolver and dislodged snipers. On another occasions, with a rifle he cleared out three enemy snipers who were in a larger crater on a road on the left and who had given constant trouble. This man has on many occasions displayed great gallantry and keenness.
