For conspicuous gallantry and initiative on the 17th Oct 1918 when the enemy positions S.E. of VAUX ANDIGNY were attacked. This man when all the N.C.O's of his Platoon had become casualties, took command, kept the remnants of his Platoon together in the thick fog and led them forward. During the attack on ANDIGNY LES FERMES he located a hostile machine-gun and engaged it with fire, thus enabling the gun to be outflanked by other troops. His courage and leadership under machine-gun and shell fire was most marked and he set a fine example to his men.
