For conspicuous gallantry when a trench was blown up in a mine. He displayed great courage and energy in the rescue of the men buried by the explosion under heavy fire.
Scunthorpe Roll of Honour: It was at Hill 60 in May 1915, that his conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty won him the D.C.M. Not withstanding the heavy fire of the enemy he continued digging men out who were buried alive until all were saved.
