(Recommended for Military Medal)
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty especially in the early morning of the 23rd April 1917 at CITE ST. PIERRE in front of LENS when he was in command of a Platoon supporting a patrol. The Platoon found the trench along which they were working blocked for eighty yards by wire and therefore they had to advance two men at a time past this block. Shortly beyond it they came under heavy rifle and machine-gun fire. Sgt. Mann acted promptly, arranged covering fire and by skilful leadership and fire control, got the whole of the patrol and supporting Platoon back without a casualty. He showed not only personal courage but initiative and skill in arranging his covering fire, at the same time keeping firm control of his men. He has previously done excellent work and shown great coolness under fire.

(Recommended for Bar to Military Medal)
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. Sgt. Mann was in command of a Platoon of an assaulting Company and did most excellent work throughout, showing a great deal of initiative. He found that the Platoon on his left had lost both its commander and next senior Sergeant, and he at once took charge of it, as well as his own, posting sentries etc in the most advantageous positions, and pointing out the positions of the enemy to his men. He was continuously on duty for twenty hours, always on the alert and watching for enemy movement which might lead to a counter attack. He twice saw signs of a coming attack, and succeeded in informing the artillery, and organising heavy rifle fire on the enemy. He worked unceasingly and showed considerable initiative, and leadership. He has already been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and ability in commanding a Platoon during a raid on the enemy trenches near CITE ST. PIERRE on April 23rd last.
