This N.C.O. came out with the Division on 28th February 1915 and has on many occasions shown courage and resource of a high order, notably at SOUCHEZ in March 1916. After a bombardment the enemy attempted to enter our trenches. This N.C.O. (at the time a Private) at once collected three or four men, rushed to the spot, and drove the enemy back inflicting casualties upon him.

For conspicuous courage and good leadership during operations East of LE TOURET on the night of 03/09/1918. The Platoon to which this N.C.O. belonged was engaged in attacking a pill-box which was holding up the advance. He worked round with one Lewis-gun team and leaving the gun with its No. 1 and 2 to cover him ordered the remainder of the team to charge with the bayonet. Four of the enemy were bayoneted, this N.C.O. himself killing the officer in charge. This remainder of the garrison fled leaving their machine-gun which was captured. He then followed up the retiring enemy with a few men capturing four. Throughout the operations this N.C.O. showed the greatest courage and fire qualities of leadership under the persistent fire of snipers and machine-guns. This N.C.O. is not in possession of any Decoration.
