For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, especially at daybreak on the 28th April 1917 at CITE ST. PIERRE when he was on command of a reconnoitring patrol. When fifty yards from our line the patrol was heavily fired upon from a flank and being encumbered with a wounded man was cut off and forced to take refuge in a house which they were unable to leave until dark. During the day a bag of rations was brought up and thrown into the road in front of the house. Cpl. Major, with full knowledge of the risk he ran, jumped out into the road and brought in the rations under heavy fire at short range. He has on many occasions shown himself to be a cool, fearless and capable leader of men, especially on patrol.
