240571 Sgt. Herbert LEWIN

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on September 8th 1817 when a raid was made on the enemy trenches, S.W. of CITE ST. ELIE. He was with a party that was detailed to go right through the enemy third line. Early in the raid the officer in Command of the party was rendered unconscious by a shell burst and Sgt. Lewin himself shaken. He, however, took command and led the party until stopped by a strong wire and heavy machine-gun fire. He then organised and directed rifle fire on the enemy third line. After that he searched the trench he was in for identification and found a deserted sentry post. From this he brought back various articles, but these no identifications. He destroyed an empty dugout nearby. He was one of the last to leave the enemy lines, covering the withdrawal with rifle fire. He also helped wounded men back. Strength of raiding party: 5 officers and 123 other ranks.
