For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. L/Cpl. Leonard was sent forward with another Battalion scout to observe what took place in the attack and to follow the movements of the assaulting Companies. They went forward with the attack and remained in the front line for two hours, moving about under heavy fire. They also shot some of the enemy. They then returned to the Battalion H.Q. and had to pass through a very heavy artillery barrage to do so. They brought back most accurate and useful information. L/Cpl. Leonard has on numerous occasions done most useful work as a Battalion Scout.
