For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917 when the Battalion captured the enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. Pte. Johnson was employed as a Battalion runner, and during the course of the day and following night he made no less than twelve journeys between Battalion Head Quarters and the front line. Practically throughout the whole period the enemy was shelling the communications trench heavily, but Pte. Johnson never showed any hesitation and carried all his messages through. He has always shown a complete contempt of danger and has done some very good work.
