For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917, when the Battalion captured the enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. After it was dark this man, although not a sentry at the time, detected the enemy forming up for a counter-attack. He at once warned the nearest Sergeant to put up the S.O.S. and then got all the men near him into their fire positions. He mounted his Lewis-gun on the top of the parapet and opened his fire inflicting many casualties on the enemy. It was a dark night and Pte. Jacobs by his watchfulness and resource in emergency averted what might have been a serious attack. His behaviour throughout the operations was most praiseworthy, and he has done well on many previous occasions.
