For gallantry and resource whilst in charge of a daylight patrol on the afternoon of the 08/08/1918, N.E. of LOISNE. This N.C.O. was in charge of a patrol consisting of himself and three other ranks. When moving to his objective, one of the patrol was shot by an enemy sentry and others were seen advancing on one of the patrol who was acting as 'point'. Seeing that an attempt at rescue would probably result in the whole patrol being captured as other parties of the enemy were advancing from both flanks, and realising the importance of getting back with the information he had obtained, Sgt. Jackson by means of skilful covering fire got the rest of the patrol clear, he himself killing one of the enemy at about 200 yards range. After seeing that his patrol was safe and the wounded man escorted back to our lines, he crawled forward again to ascertain whether anything could be seen of the missing man. This N.C.O. showed fine qualities of leadership, resource and courage. He brought back valuable information.
