241683 Pte. William HOWARD

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on July 1st 1917, when the Battalion attacked the enemy positions in CITE Du MOULIN, S.W. of LENS. Zero hour was at 2.30am. For several hours no news could be obtained from the right assaulting Company and this man with Pte. Dugard who always works with him volunteered to go out and clear up the situation. To do this they had to go over the open for some 600 yards in full view over ground that was subjected to continual fire from artillery, machine-guns and rifles. They accomplished their task and brought back most valuable information. Owing to the exposed nature of the ground, communication was most difficult and during the day the two men made four more journeys over this ground under similar conditions. At night a relieving Company lost its way and these men although told that they would no longer be required, at once came forward and led the Company to its destination, thereby making relief possible before daylight. Throughout the day their gallantry, willingness and cheerfulness under very trying circumstances were most praiseworthy and they rendered very valuable services.

241683 Pte. William HOWARD

(Recommended for Bar to Military Medal)

For gallantry and determination whilst on a daylight patrol with an Officer and one other scout N.E of LOISNE on 06/08/1918. The patrol had penetrated to a distance of about 220 yards behind the enemy front line and found several dugouts in one of which were six of the enemy asleep. A bomb was placed in their midst and the patrol withdrew. Whilst doing so they were discovered and parties of the enemy immediately began to advance towards them. Pte. Howard and the Officer covered Pte. Bell whilst he placed another bomb into the dugout and Pte. Howard remained in positions covering the officer and the man with rifle fire until they had reached a place of safety, although the enemy were in considerable numbers. Throughout the patrol he obtained a great deal of useful information and displayed great courage and resource of a high order. Pte. Howard was awarded the Military Medal on 23/07/1917 for gallantry before LENS 1st July 1917.
