On the 22nd August 1916 a German shell exploded in a trench in which gas cylinders were installed and caused a larger escape of gas. L/Cpl. Hill, who was in the next bay immediately realised the danger and although severely gassed himself, remained in the trench warning all the men in the neighbourhood to put on this gas helmets and rousing up men in dugouts to do so. His prompt action and disregard for his personal safety undoubtedly saved several lives and prevented numerous casualties.
Submitted 25/08/1916; Awarded Military Medal.
