240095 L/Cpl. William Vernon HEWITT

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. This N.C.O. showed great courage and coolness during the attack and when the position had been won, he displayed considerable judgement in placing and organising the post of which he was in charge. At one period in the attack he found ammunition was running short and he himself went back through a very heavy barrage to get a further supply. He thus enabled a Lewis-gun, which was doing good work in inflicting casualties on the enemy, to keep on firing. This N.C.O. has done very fine work on many occasions, and his men will follow him anywhere.
