For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917, when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. This N.C.O. was No. 1 of a Lewis-gun team about the centre of the attack. The left of the attack was for a time held up and he at once grasped the situation and brought his gun into action against the enemy who were resisting on the left, inflicting many casualties on them, and materially assisted the advance. Later he was instrumental in capturing several prisoners. Throughout he behaved with great coolness and gallantry.
