240440 C.S.M. Wilfred Ernest HAMP

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 12th 1917, when the Company to which he belonged raided the enemy trenches West of LENS. Soon after starting the Company Commander and the only other officer present were wounded and unable to climb the slap-heap to the objective. C.S.M. Hamp then took command of the Company. He showed great gallantry, initiative and energy in organising the Company seeing the objective gained and superintending the withdrawal. On his return he rejoined his Company Commander at the bottom of the slag-heap and commenced to assist him back to our trenches with the aid of another N.C.O. They then found in "no man's land" a badly wounded N.C.O. The party remained with him till a stretcher had been fetched. C.S.M. Hamp then remained with his Company Commander and assisted him back to our trenches. His conduct after the officers became casualties was most admirable and he set a splendid example to the men. He has done much good work and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry at the HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT on October 13th 1915. Strength of raiding party: 2 officers and 102 other ranks.
