240675 Pte. Harry GROSS (Grimsby) Attached 188th Brigade Trench Mortar Battery

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For gallantry and devotion to duty on December 12th 1917 S.W. of AUCHY-LEZ-LA-BASSE, when firing a Stokes trench mortar in action against the enemy. Pte. Gross noticed that the lever of one of the trench mortar bombs had been knocked off, thereby causing the fuse to burn. Realising that in twelve seconds the bomb would explode, he placed it in the mortar with the intention of firing it at the enemy, but the cartridge misfired and the bomb remained in the mortar with the fuse still burning. In order to avoid an explosion, which would have wrecked the mortar and endangered the lives of the other men in the emplacement, Pte. Gross quickly raised the base of the mortar and catching the bomb as it slid from the muzzle, threw it out of the emplacement, where it immediately exploded. There were 200 detonated trench mortar bombs in the emplacement and the ammunition store communicating with it.

Submitted by 138th Trench Mortar Battery 13/02/1917; Awarded D.C.M. 24/12/1917 [L/G 04/03/1918]; Also received Card of Recognition and awarded Croix de Guerre 18/10/1918

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Noticing that a lever of one of the trench mortar bombs had been knocked off, causing the fuse to burn, which would explode the bomb in twelve seconds, he placed it in the mortar with the intention of firing it. But the cartridge miss fired. So in order to avoid an explosion he quickly raised the base of the mortar, and, catching the bomb, threw it out of the emplacement, where it immediately exploded. There were 300 detonated bombs in the emplacement.
