(Recommended for Military Medal)
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 26th 1917, when the Battalion was holding the recently captured line on HILL 65, South West of LENS. A dugout was blown in by an enemy time-fused mine and several N.C.O's and men were buried. Sgt. Gouldthorpe at once went to their rescue and himself went down the shaft of the dugout on three separate occasions, each time bringing out a man. He was eventually overcome by fumes. He undoubtedly saved the lives of the three men.

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 1st July 1917, when the Battalion attacked the enemy position at CITE DU MOULIN, South West of LENS. In the first advance the Company was checked by machine-gun fire, and this N.C.O. at once advanced and single handed attacked the machine-gun. He threw bombs at the gun, which was firing through the wall of a house, and killed two of the gunners. Before he could get round the house and into it, the other gunners had bolted with the gun. However during the day there was no gun fired again from this spot. Later he was ordered to take a party of eight men and establish himself in a forward post. Under very heavy fire from machine-guns and rifles he led his men forward and got them into position in shell holes. From here he opened fire on several parties of the enemy and inflicted heavy casualties. Beyond his personal gallantry he displayed throughout great initiative and powers of command. Although wounded, he insisted on remaining on duty until the position was properly established. This N.C.O. has already been recommended for the Military Medal on June 26th last.
