For gallantry and devotion to duty on several occasion notably on July 1st 1917 when the enemy positions at CITE DU MOULIN, S.W. of LENS were attacked. This N.C.O. personally collected and sent forward bombing parties to reinforce our line under very heavy fire in daylight. Later in the day when all his officers had become casualties he commanded his Company under very difficult conditions for a day and a night and brought them out on relief. During a period of thirty months in this country. Sgt. Gouldthorpe has done consistent good work. He sets a fine example to his men.

The citation was published in the London Gazette as follows: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at all times, and notably during an attack on enemy positions, when he command his company for a day and a half under very trying conditions with marked courage and success.
