(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on many occasions especially during the nights 7th/8th and 8th/9th of June 1916, when he walked along the open and steadied his Platoon who were digging an advanced (Bush) trench under heavy fire. And before GOMMECOURT on the night of the 2nd/3rd July 1916 when he went close to the German wire and spent a considerable time under fire in an unsuccessful search for the body of his Platoon Officer who had been killed the night before.
