For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on July 1st 1917 when the Battalion attacked the enemy positions at CITE DU MOULIN, S.W. of LENS. He was in charge of a Lewis-gun and when the left of the attack was held up, he immediately got his gun into position to protect the left flank, although in a very open and exposed place. He engaged enemy machine-guns at very close range. He was constantly on the lookout for the enemy and undoubtedly inflicted many casualties on them. On one occasion some fifty of the enemy were seen massing on a road. L/Cpl. French at once got his gun into action down the road and the enemy dispersed, many of them being hit. He eventually took up an advanced position and remained there all day under heavy fire of all kinds. He displayed great coolness and gallantry throughout the day, and did much to enable the ground gained to be maintained.
