On the night of the 20th August 1917 the ration train was only able to reach within 750 yards of the Mansion House Dump VERMELLES, which is its destination, where rations are transferred to small tracks which are man handled. The metals being blown up in several places, rations had to be dumped in the open until the small trucks were fetched from Mansion House Dump. These could only be got to within 100 yards of the rations. The enemy then shelled heavily and the shells were dropping around the rations, which scattered the men in all directions. C.Q.M.S. Rushton, Cpl. Lawson, L/Cpl. Epton, Pte. Clarke and Pte. Beeby seeing that the rations were in danger of being blown up, stuck to their posts and moved the whole of the Battalion's rations to the small trucks into safety, the enemy shelling the whole time.
