This N.C.O had on many occasions displayed courage and initiative in action, particularly on the 3rd September 1918 during operations East of Le Touret. On this occasion he climbed a tree within 200 yards of an enemy machine-gun and observed the fire of two Sections who were engaging it. He was heavily sniped at and eventually wounded but continued to carry out his duties until ordered to go to the Regimental Aid Post.
