For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on September 8th 1917 when a raid was made on the enemy trenches S.W. of CITE ST. ELIE. He was leading man of a party that was working up a communication trench, when on going round a traverse they found themselves face to face with a strong barricade from which the enemy opened fire with rifles and bombs. Pte. Eckles remained in the trench and opened rapid fire at the loophole in the barricade until the party withdrew. The enemy threw many bombs while he did this. Later he saw some of the enemy moving in the open and he at once collected the men near him and directed fire on the enemy. He showed great cheerfulness and disregard for danger throughout. Strength of raiding party 5 officers and 123 other ranks.
