(Recommended for Military Medal)
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 12th 1917, when a raid was made on the enemy trenches west of LENS. Sgt. Darley was in command of the Platoon on the left of the first wave and set a fine example in the way he led his men and organised them when the objective had been gained. The officers taking part on the raid had become casualties and it fell to Sgt. Darley to take charge of the left of the attack. This he did in a most admirable manner showing great courage under fire. Strength of raiding party: 2 officers and 102 other ranks.
