At FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN S.W. of LENS on the night of 8-9th June 1917 this N.C.O. together with another N.C.O., was in charge of the machine-gun attached to the right assaulting Company. When the enemy made his counter-attack this N.C.O. with another N.C.O. first defended their gun with bombs. When all they had were expended they carried the gun to the edge of the slag heap and opened fire, covering the withdrawal of the Infantry. One of them covered the retirement of the gun with revolver fire while the other carried the gun. They set a splendid example of coolness and courage whilst under fire.
