He returned carrying a wounded man on his back. He asked permissions to got out and bring in another man whom he knew to be lying out within forty yards of the German wire and succeeded in doing so. 240098 Sgt. Arthur COPPIN

(Recommended for Bar to Military Medal)

For gallantry and devotion to duty on Jun 12th 1917 when a raid was made on the enemy trenches west of LENS. Sgt. Coppin was in command of a Platoon in the first wave of the attack and showed coolness and initiative in leading and handling his Platoon after all officers had become casualties. On the way back after withdrawal he assisted back (with the C.S.M.) the Company Commander who had been wounded. They found a badly wounded N.C.O. lying on the ground and Sgt. Coppin went to our trenches and got a stretcher and assisted to carry the wounded N.C.O in. Throughout he showed great coolness and courage under fire. This N.C.O was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry at Gommecourt on July 2nd 1916.
