241662 Pte. Edwin CONROY (Cleethorpes)

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on July 1st 1917 when the Battalion attacked the enemy positions at CITE DU MOULIN, S.W. of LENS. This man with another stretcher bearer (Pte. Norton) carried three stretcher cases in daylight over the slopes of HILL 65 which was subjected at the time to heavy fire especially from snipers. Two other stretcher bearers were hit, but they still persisted. Later the same two men went into the houses on the outskirts of CITE DU MOULIN, and brought back another wounded man. Fire was very heavy all the time.

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For exceptional services and gallantry under fire during the period under review. This man is a stretcher-barer, and has on many occasions shown great gallantry in the discharge of his duties, notably during an enemy attack on ROUTE 'A' KEEP, north-west of FESTUBERT on 30th May 1918. During the bombardment and during the attack, he walked along the parados of the trench encouraging men, and continued to do this when not actually employed attending to wounded men. He sets a fine example of cheerfulness and courage to all ranks. This man is not in possession of any decoration.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when the Battalion attacked FRESNOY-LE-GRAND on October 9th 1918 and during subsequent operations on 10th October. This man who is a stretcher bearer showed great gallantry and devotion in attending to wounded on the night of 9th October when FRESNOY-LE-GRAND was very heavily shelled. Later during the advance to the BOHAIN-SEBOMCOURT road he was wounded but continued to carry out his duties until ordered to return to the Regimental Aid Post. He set a fine example of courage and devotion to duty. This man is not in possession of any decoration.
