On the morning of the 23rd April 1917 when the Battalion was in the front line near CITE ST. PIERRE, Pte. Cockayne was on of a bombing party that was cut off in front of our line and isolated in a house by hostile rifle and machine-gun fire. He volunteered to carry a message to our line which entailed crossing two open roads which were covered at short range by enemy machine-guns. He succeeded in crossing these roads although fired at and delivered his message. He then again crawled over the ground and carried back a message to the officer in command of the isolated post.
