For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. He was employed as a Company runner and twice volunteered to carry urgent messages through a very heavy barrage. He was successful in delivering his messages on both occasions, and did this difficult work with great speed and coolness. Throughout he behaved in a most cheerful and courageous manner.
